Dogs at Hoyt Arboretum
Yes. Dogs are welcome at Hoyt Arboretum on every trail, as long as they are on a leash at all times. Portland Parks & Recreation requires leashes throughout the park, and there is no off-leash area. Hoyt Arboretum Friends welcomes leashed dogs in the Visitor Center, where there is a dog water fountain in the courtyard. Pick up waste right away.
Dogs at a Glance
The Rules
- Leash at all times, everywhere in the arboretum. Portland Parks & Recreation lists it as park policy.
- Pick up waste immediately and carry it out.
- No foraging. Leave plants and animals as you find them.
The same leash rule applies on the Wildwood Trail into Forest Park and across Washington Park.
Where Dogs Can Go
Everywhere in the arboretum: all 12 miles of trails, the Redwood Deck, the meadows and the Visitor Center courtyard. Hoyt Arboretum Friends says leashed dogs are welcome inside the Visitor Center too, and a post on its site mentions a free biscuit at the desk.
Water
A dog water fountain stands next to the two drinking fountains in the Visitor Center courtyard. Carry water for longer walks.
The Shuttle Problem
Pets cannot ride the Washington Park Free Shuttle; only service animals can. If you come with a dog, drive and park at the Visitor Center lots, or walk in from the MAX station on the Overlook Trail, about half a mile. See parking.
Coyotes
Coyotes live in the arboretum and are often seen in daylight. Portland Parks & Recreation follows Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife guidance: keep your dog on a leash, keep small children close, and make loud noises, like clapping or shouting, if a coyote approaches.
Good Walks With a Dog
- The 0.9-mile Spruce, Wildwood and Redwood loop to the Redwood Deck.
- The Wildwood Trail north toward Pittock Mansion for a longer walk. See Wildwood Trail.
Maybe Skip If
- Your dog needs off-leash time. There is no off-leash area in Hoyt Arboretum.
