Getting There at a Glance
Driving and Parking
Set your map to 4000 SW Fairview Blvd, Portland, OR 97221, the Visitor Center. Hoyt Arboretum sits in the hills of Washington Park, about two miles from downtown.
Where to park:
- The large lot on Fairview Blvd, beside the Visitor Center. Stairs and a ramp lead up to the Visitor Center courtyard.
- The small lot across Fairview Blvd. Sidewalks and a crosswalk connect it to the courtyard. The rideshare pick-up and drop-off zone is here.
- The Vietnam Veterans Memorial lot, at the south end of the arboretum near the start of the Wildwood Trail.
- Trailhead parking along Fairview Blvd, on SW Fischer Lane and by the Winter Garden. Read the signs: parking along park roads where "No Parking" is posted gets a ticket.

What Parking Costs
Portland Parks & Recreation charges the same rate in the Hoyt lots as in the Rose Garden, Japanese Garden and Zoo lots:
- $2.52 an hour, $15.12 a day maximum.
- Enforced 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, holidays included.
- Pay at the meter or with Parking Kitty (zone 410). You can also text KITTY to 30844 to pay without the app. Use the real app or that text number: Hoyt Arboretum Friends warns about fake Parking Kitty websites.
Parking revenue goes back into Washington Park, according to the city. If you move your car to another lot in Washington Park, you pay again; ride the free shuttle between attractions instead.
Accessible Parking
- Large lot on Fairview Blvd: 2 accessible spaces with an access aisle between them.
- Small lot on Fairview Blvd: 1 accessible space.
- Fischer Lane lot at the Bristlecone Pine trailhead: 2 accessible spaces. This lot serves only the paved Bristlecone Pine Trail, which is closed for rebuilding from October 27, 2026.
Drivers with a regular disabled placard still pay during enforcement hours. Portland Parks & Recreation lets cars with an Oregon "Wheelchair User" or "Wounded Warrior" placard park without paying and without a time limit.
By MAX Light Rail
Take the MAX Red or Blue Line to Washington Park station. It is underground, so take the elevator up. From the top, the arboretum's trails start a few hundred yards away near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, or you can ride the free shuttle to the Visitor Center. The walk to the Visitor Center along the paved Overlook Trail is about half a mile. See Washington Park MAX station.
By Bus
TriMet Line 63 runs between Pioneer Courthouse Square downtown and the north end of Washington Park, near the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden. From there, ride the shuttle or walk the Wildwood Trail up to the arboretum.
The Free Shuttle
The Washington Park Free Shuttle loops the park and stops in front of the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center. It runs 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April to September and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from October to March. All shuttles are wheelchair accessible. Pets cannot ride, except service animals.
Walking In
- From the Washington Park MAX station: ½ mile on the Overlook Trail to the Visitor Center.
- From the Japanese Garden and Rose Garden: the Garden Connector Trail and the Wildwood Trail.
- From Pittock Mansion: south on the Wildwood Trail and over the Barbara Walker Crossing. See Pittock Mansion.
Biking In
Bikes can ride the roads but are not allowed on the arboretum's trails. From the MAX station, ride up SW Knights Blvd and turn right on SW Fairview Blvd. There are bike racks in the lot across from the Visitor Center and one in the courtyard.
Car Break-ins
The city warns that car prowls happen in Washington Park. Take bags and valuables with you or lock them in the trunk before you arrive, close the windows and lock the doors. There is no luggage storage at the arboretum.
